Meditations for the spiritually abused: Will I be alone forever?

Will I be alone forever?

Leaving a spiritually abusive community can be one of the loneliest seasons of life. The loneliness can sink into your bones and feel like it’s never going to leave. This is completely normal. Think of the loneliness as a sign that you were surrounded by people who weren’t genuinely connected to you as a person—they were only around as long as you “behaved” a certain way. It’s possible that your spiritual leaders made you wary or fearful of people outside the fold. Perhaps you feared the “others” would taint you by their negative influence, causing you to build up protective mechanisms to keep yourself “pure” or “holy.” It is highly likely, however, that the people you were taught to fear are the exact people who will create a loving and safe space for you while you journey away from spiritual abuse.

You will not be alone forever.

There are people waiting to learn about you without an agenda.

You have valuable insights and thoughts that others would find interesting.

You are allowed to befriend whomever you like.

You decide who you let in and who stays out.
